Hat and bonnet - Hattu ja myssy

I got the patterns from two great books that I have, "Sewing Dolls' Clothes" (27 projects from the Dolls' House Magazine) and "Making and Dressing Dolls' House Dolls" (by Sue Atkinson). I cut the pattern pieces from thin cardboard and glued the fabric on them. I very much enjoyed making the hats and I want to make more! I think I will try to make a straw hat next.

Grandmother's lace - Isoäidin pitsejä - Alte Häkelspitzen

I bought this crochet pattern book - "Grandmother's lace" - yesterday.The book has a few patterns which are suitable for crocheting miniature shawls, collars, curtains or table runners etc (and you can modify some of the patterns by reducing the number of stitches or layers). The book is in Finnish and it is based on two German books named Alte Häkelspitzen I and II by Barbara and Marlies Mueller. The patterns are shown in photographs and stitch charts. There are no instructions written out in words, which is fine for me as I prefer crocheting by following pictorial patterns. I recommend this book!

Ostin eilen tämän virkkausohjekirjan - Isoäidin pitsejä, ohjeet Barbara ja Marlies Mueller, toimittanut Laila Kemppinen. Kirjassa on useita malleja, jotka sopivat nukkekodin tai nukkien hartiahuivien, kaulusten, verhojen tai kaitaliinojen virkkaamiseen (ja malleja pystyy tarvittaessa muuttamaan vähentämällä silmukoiden tai kerrosten määrää). Mallit näytetään valokuvina ja piirroksina, ei kirjallisina ohjeina, mikä sopii minulle, sillä seuraan mieluiten kuvallisia malleja. Suosittelen tätä kirjaa!

I am an enthusiastic iPadder. I recently bought my first digital issue of the Dolls' House Magazine. Today I found out that the Dolls House Miniature Scene is available on the App Store too. You can either buy a single issue or make a 6 issue subscription.

Dollhouse story from 1980 - Nukkekotijuttu vuodelta 1980

This article about dollhouses is from a Finnish home decoration magazine named Avotakka from the year 1980. The magazine was found at my husband’s family’s summer cabin and I was very very happy to get it. The article features several old dollhouses from the collections of the Finnish National Museum (you can read more about them in the National Museum’s “Dream homes” exhibition here) and the Moomin house made by Tove Jansson and Tuulikki Pietilä, which is now located in the Moomin Valley in Tampere library. You can also read where in Helsinki you could buy dollhouse furniture and accessories in the 1980’s. 

Tämä nukkekotiartikkeli on peräisin vuoden 1980 Avotakka-lehdestä, joka löytyi mieheni suvun kesämökiltä. Olin tosi iloinen kun sain se käsiini. Jutussa kerrotaan mm. useasta vanhasta Suomen kansallismuseon kokoelmiin kuuluvasta nukkekodista (Kansallismuseon ”Unelmien koti” -näyttelystä voi lukea lisää täältä) ja Tove Janssonin ja Tuulikki Pietilän tekemästä Muumi-talosta, joka on nykyään esillä Tampereen kirjastossa sijaitsevassa Muumilaaksossa. Jutussa kerrotaan myös mistä Helsingin kaupoista sai 1980-luvulla ostettua nukkekotiin kalusteita ja tarvikkeita.

Today the mail brought the newest issue of the magazine of the Finnish Dollhouse Association. In its cover there is a picture of Susanna Ruotsalainen's charming Agatha Christie living room, which got the first prize in this year's miniature room competition organized by the dollhouse association. Knitting and crochet stitches and miniature mysteries

   I was very pleased to receive my order from Adlibris this week. I bought these two books: "the Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches" by Reader's Digest and "Mourning in Miniature" by Margaret Grace.

   Some of the crochet stitches in the book are same as the stitches in my favourite crochet book "300 Crochet Stitches", but there are also several new ones. I am already crocheting one of them, as I am making a shawl for one of my dolls.

   And the other book, it is the fourth novel in Margaret Grace's miniature mysteries series. I have enjoyed so much reading the first three books and I am sure that I am going to have a good time reading this one, too. 

   Olin hyvin tyytyväinen, kun sain viikolla tilaukseni Adlibriksestä. Ostin nämä kaksi kirjaa: Valittujen Palojen "the Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches" ja Margaret Gracen "Mourning in Miniature".

   Jotkut kirjan virkkausmalleista ovat samoja kuin suosikkivirkkauskirjassani "300 Crochet Stitches", mutta siinä on myös paljon uusia malleja. Kokeilen niistä jo yhtä, kun virkkaan hartiahuivia yhdelle nukeistani.

   Ja toinen kirja on Margaret Gracen miniatyyrimysteerisarjan neljäs osa. Olen nauttinut tosi paljon muiden kolmen kirjan lukemisesta, ja uskon että tämänkin kirjan parissa on mukavaa.

Malice in Miniature - Ilkeyttä pienoiskoossa

I am so pleased to be able to spend some quality time with my good old miniaturist friend Geraldine Porter and her granddaughter Maddie again! That means that I have just got Margaret Grace's newest mystery book, "Malice in Miniature". It is an autographed copy and I am so happy about it.

Margaret Grace's books are fascinating reading for anyone who's a friend of mysteries, and the fact that the protagonist is a miniaturist, brings even more charm to them.

Olen niin tyytyväinen kun saan taas viettää laatuaikaa vanhan hyvän minatyristiystäväni Geraldine Porterin ja hänen pojantyttärensä Maddien kanssa! Olen nimittäin juuri saanut Margaret Gracen uusimman dekkarin, "Malice in Miniature". Kirja on hänen signeeraamansa ja olen siitä niin iloinen.

Margaret Gracen kirjat ovat kiehtovaa luettavaa kaikille dekkarien ystäville, ja se että kirjojen päähenkilö on minatyristi, tuo niihin oman viehättävän lisänsä. Suomessa Margaret Gracen kirjoja voi ostaa mm. Suomalaisesta kirjakaupasta.

Mayhem in Miniature - Sekasorto pienoiskoossa

A piece of good news to all miniaturists who enjoy reading mysteries: Margaret Grace's newest book "Mayhem in Miniature" is available now. I have just received my copy of the book and I started to read it and I enjoy it as much as I enjoyed reading "Murder in Miniature", the first book in the Dollhouse Mysteries series.

Hyviä uutisia mineilijöille, jotka pitävät dekkareista: Margaret Gracen uusin kirja "Mayhem in Miniature" on ilmestynyt. Ostin kirjan juuri ja aloin lukea sitä ja pidän siitä yhtä paljon kuin pidin "Murder in Miniature" -kirjasta, Dollhouse Mysteries -sarjan ensimmäisestä osasta.

My hobby in a magazine

I got the chance to introduce my hobby and the Riikonen house in a magazine, in the June hobby issue of my trade union's magazine. Being interviewed was quite a fun experience. Katja, the photographer/writer took loads of pictures, and I think they turned out really good. And she wrote the story in a very nice and inspiring way. Who knows if someone decides to get a new hobby after reading the story!

Murder in Miniature

Some time ago I was thrilled to hear about a lady named Camille Minichino, a.k.a. Margaret Grace, who writes mysteries whose protagonist is a miniaturist. As I enjoy reading mysteries and detective stories, I got interested and ordered the book from my book store right away. Yesterday I received my copy and I started to read it, and so far, I like it very much!

I am glad that there will be more books in the Dollhouse Mysteries series and the next one will come out in August.
